DOLLY PARTON -- SHE SHALL OVERCOME
These notes are intended for readers who already have a solid knowledge of the Chinese Bazi technique, which seeks to interpret and predict people’s lives on the basis of the Four Pillars (sizhu 四柱), or Eight Characters (bazi 八字), of their birth charts.
The case I analyse below is that of country singer Dolly Parton, who died on 25 August 2026. She was, and remains, an icon of American culture in the field of entertainment, particularly country music. But there is more to her than that, notably the way in which she managed to win the heart of the nation far beyond the sphere of music. It was no coincidence that, following her death, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff for seven days as a sign of national mourning.
Let us examine the Bazi birth chart of Dolly Parton, who was born on 19 January 1946 in Sevierville, Tennessee, at 8.25 p.m.

The Day Master of her chart is yin Water (the heavenly stem gui 癸), born in the third month of cosmic winter: the earthly branch chou 丑, better known by the name of its corresponding zodiac sign, the Ox.
During cosmic winter, Water is classified as ‘strong’ or ‘prosperous’, since this is the season of the Water element. However, Earth is the dominant element during this third month of winter, and this presents a challenge. Earth tends to control Water and, in this particular case, the challenge becomes clear because yin Earth (ji 己), which is the stem of the Month Pillar, has a very solid root in the earthly branch of that same pillar. In terms of the ‘Ten Gods’, this yin Earth corresponds, in this case, to the Seven Killings energy, which we call THE WARRIOR Profile in our ‘Life Pillars’ mobile application and on the website www.thelifepillars.com.
The Warrior profile also appears in Barack Obama’s Bazi chart. He too was born in a month during which his Day Master — the Earth element — was strong, while the stem corresponding to The Warrior profile appears in the same Month Pillar, with a solid root within that pillar.
In both cases, this indicates ambition and a desire for power and authority within the context of a chart possessing sufficient potential to face major challenges.
The similarities, however, end there.
In Dolly Parton’s case, there is a powerful configuration that shapes the entire interpretation. The earthly branches of the Day, Month and Year Pillars — respectively, si 巳, chou 丑 and you 酉, corresponding to the Snake, Ox and Rooster — form a Three Harmony Combination. This generates a particularly powerful Metal element, which, in turn, further strengthens the Water of the Day Master. In other words, this is a Day Master strong enough to face all kinds of challenges.
Among the other interesting features of this chart, what happens to the Seven Killings energy — which is typically quite challenging — deserves particular attention. On the one hand, as I have already mentioned, the Day Master is sufficiently strengthened to respond to the pressure of Seven Killings in a creative and productive manner. This pressure arises from the Earth element attempting to control or discipline Water. On the other hand, since Earth generates Metal, it is reasonable to consider that, in this case, the strong presence of Metal absorbs, as it were, the energy of Earth, thereby neutralising its potential aggressiveness.
Finally, the strong Resource influence, together with the qualities traditionally associated with a yin Water Day Master, may have much to do with Dolly P
